Reviews - Lawrence “Butch” Morris, Jason Lindner, Yamandù Costa, Bifunk feat.Fabrizio Bosso by Giuseppe Segala Lawrence “Butch” Morris, Conduction 191 Saturday, 26. June was a festival day dedicated mainly to the teaching aspect of music. It was crowned by a convincing performance in the concert hall of the Monteverdi Conservatory of an ensemble of young instrumentalists conducted by Lawrence “Butch“ Morris. The orchestra, consisting of students of the Conservatory and the Vivaldi Music Institute, staged Morris‘ opus “Conduction 191“ after attending a four-day workshop with the US-musician. In such short time Morris was capable of forming a homogenous ensemble which translated the intentions of the composer and conductor with great intensity and overwhelming fluidity. The performance exceeded all expectations and the young musicians themselves hoped that they would get another opportunity soon to expand this valuable experience. The four movements of the composition, skilfully combined with a number of intensive and varying transitional passages, end in a short but brilliant dance. Jason Lindner “Now vs Now” The young pianist from New York Jason Lindner is without doubt one of those few personalities who will have a say in the future jazz scene. In their top performance that lasted more than two hours some extraordinary and most diverse solo musicians, such as the US trumpeter Avishai Cohen, the Columbian harpist Edmar Castaneda or the rapper and urban poet Baba Israel, and, in particular the trio of Lindner, the Greek bass player Alexander Panagiotis and the percussionist Mark Giuliana impressed the audience of the City Theatre of Bolzano/Bozen. The concert was characterised by a homogenous and perfectly defined musical performance with much energy and irresistible metropolitan groove. Yamandù Costa – Guto Wirtti On Tuesday, 29 June the South Tyrol Jazz Festival presented a spectacular highlight of musical virtuosity and creativity with the concert of the Brazilian guitarist Yamandù Costa, joined by Guto Wirtti and his bass guitar. On the floating stage in the park of the Hotel Laurin in Bolzano/Bozen the duo combined South American tradition with classical elements inspired by great composers such as Pixinguinha and Hector Villa Lobos. Thanks to his outstanding virtuosity, spontaneity, sensitivity and sense for harmonious interplay, the guitarist can perfectly use the innate rhythmical power, the temper and the expressive intensity of a geographical area that merges the different cultures of Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay). Bifunk and Fabrizio Bosso Bifunk and Fabrizio Bosso on the Corno del Renon/Rittner Horn: not only literally, with hiking boots and windbreakers, did the musicians from the Trentino and South Tyrol regions reach the top, but also in a musical sense. The joint project with Fabrizio Bosso meant an important experience for the fifteen members of the swinging orchestra that emerged as a marching band and still mainly performs as such. The concert that took place on Tuesday, 29 June on the Felthurner Hütte, in the midst of lush green pastures and surrounded by majestic mountain tops, was dominated by the music of Miles Davis, featuring famous classics like “So What”, “Jean Pierre” and “Gingerbread Boy”. Another highlight was a remake of “Miles Davis Licks”, composed by Michel Petrucciani and rearranged for the occasion by Roberto Gorgazzini. Bosso’s presence and his pyrotechnical intermezzos incited the band to put their best foot forward and perform some remarkable solos. TextcommentsBack |
