Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige 2010

25. June bis 4th July

The South Tyrol Jazz Festival keeps on growing. This year for the first time the Vinschgau valley/Val Venosta will take its place as one of the many special concert venues throughout the province which altogether will stage almost 100 performances. But the festival is not about breaking records. This further expansion of the event rather reflects the growing interest on part of the population as well as the goodwill of our partners and institutional supporters, who take part in this exciting project.
For ten days 250 musicians from 16 nations will take jazz sounds to cities and villages, to mountain plains, refuges, castles and wineries, creating a special festival atmosphere across the country. Such a wide range is not only unique for SouthTyrol but also a rare phenomenon among jazz festivals in general. In order to reach an even larger audience many of the concerts will again be free of charge.
The Festival programme will once again be characterised by many different performances featuring international stars as well as many young talents. This year’s edition will also give a stage to numerous local musicians who were commissioned with major projects in the framework of the festival. Even young future stars – the students of the South Tyrolean music schools - will get a chance to show their talent on stage.
I am convinced that this festival has something in store for everyone who seeks top quality music or enchanting locations. Therefore I wish all visitors from South Tyrol and abroad ten enjoyable festival days.

Reviews - Joe Locke, Enrico Rava Orchestra, Schumacher-Schriefl

by Giuseppe Segala

Joe Locke – Dado Moroni – Rosario Giuliani
On Tuesday 30 June Umbria Jazz presented a trio in concert at the Eurac Academy that was only recently formed and which is about to release an Album for the label Egea. The US vibraphonist Joe Locke, the Roman saxophonist Rosario Giuliani and the pianist from Genoa Dado Moroni created a great atmosphere with their performance and were awarded with much applause. The protagonist of the outstanding concert was certainly Dado Moroni, who played an important role within the trio and generously played with sound nuances and dynamic subtleties, while the other two musicians presented rather predictable solos of technical difficulty. The highlights of the evening were to be heard in the more extensive pieces of the repertoire, such as the well known tunes “The Peacock” and “Bags’ Groove”, as well as in Moroni’s beautiful composition “Brother Alfred”, which is dedicated to McCoy Tyner.

Enrico Rava Orchestra, feat. Gianluigi Trovesi and Gianluca Petrella
The orchestra of the Roman “House of Jazz“, with which Enrico Rava brought the project dedicated to George Gershwin to Bolzano’s City Theatre, contains some of the best young solo musicians of the Italian peninsula. Dan Kinzelman, 28-year-old tenor saxophonist with his origins in Wisconsin, contributed the fascinating new arrangements of Gershwin’s famous compositions from “Porgy and Bess“ and “Rhapsody in Blue“, for melodies like “I Love You Porgy”, “Summertime”, “But Not For Me” or “The Man I Love”.
“It would not make any sense to repeat such a frequently performed repertoire another time, if not with open-mindedness and a new approach“, said Rava after the concert. This is the reason why Gershwin’s classics are mixed with episodes of funk and latin, and even contain an entertaining Dixieland trio consisting of Rava himself, plus two more outstanding guests of the evening: the saxophonist and clarinettist Gianluigi Trovesi and the trombonist Gianluca Petrella.

Pascal Schumacher and Matthias Schriefl
At the “Point 12“ headquarters of the Sparkasse in Bolzano/Bozen the vibraphonist Pascal Schumacher and the trumpeter Matthias Schriefl, two very promising talents of the European jazz scene, performed together in a concert for the first time. Their music, which is based on traditional jazz but every now and then ventures in unexpected territories, was characterised by great intensity, with frequent solos of astounding creativity. Another interesting element of this duo is that it combines two entirely different types of musician, who still complement each other perfectly.
