Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige 2010

25. June bis 4th July

The South Tyrol Jazz Festival keeps on growing. This year for the first time the Vinschgau valley/Val Venosta will take its place as one of the many special concert venues throughout the province which altogether will stage almost 100 performances. But the festival is not about breaking records. This further expansion of the event rather reflects the growing interest on part of the population as well as the goodwill of our partners and institutional supporters, who take part in this exciting project.
For ten days 250 musicians from 16 nations will take jazz sounds to cities and villages, to mountain plains, refuges, castles and wineries, creating a special festival atmosphere across the country. Such a wide range is not only unique for SouthTyrol but also a rare phenomenon among jazz festivals in general. In order to reach an even larger audience many of the concerts will again be free of charge.
The Festival programme will once again be characterised by many different performances featuring international stars as well as many young talents. This year’s edition will also give a stage to numerous local musicians who were commissioned with major projects in the framework of the festival. Even young future stars – the students of the South Tyrolean music schools - will get a chance to show their talent on stage.
I am convinced that this festival has something in store for everyone who seeks top quality music or enchanting locations. Therefore I wish all visitors from South Tyrol and abroad ten enjoyable festival days.

Good attendance: “respectable success“

Summing up the organisers of the South Tyrol Jazz Festival 2010 call the event a “respectable success“ in terms of visitor numbers and claim that overall it offered a “very good atmosphere among musicians, audience and media representatives“.
Chairman Klaus Widmann counted an approximate 18,000 jazz fans who followed themore than 100 concerts in 10 days.

This year the performances on mountain refuges and vineries were particularly popular, the same is true for concerts that took place in other unusual venues. “When 200 people take the effort to come to the maze of the Kränzelhof in Tscherms/Cermes at 5 in the morning, in order to see the sunset during a jazz concert, I take it as a sign that our audience appreciates what we do,” remembers Klaus Widmann happily. Other concerts in not so usual places were similarly popular, such as the boat and bike event along the river Adige between Nals/Nalles and Sigmundskron/Castel Firmian, or the mountain concerts. “On these occasions we
could generally observe growing spectator numbers,” says Widmann. Even the concerts in the Vinschgau/Val Venosta, for the first time on this year’s concert schedule, took place in front of a large audience.

Slightly reduced public interest could be observed for the mainstage concerts. “The Football World Cup was a competitor that our concerts apparently could not keep up with. On top of that, some evenings were really hot and many people preferred staying outside in the open air,“ speculates Widmann. It was only two years ago that Widmann himself moved most of the main evening concerts into concert halls to avoid the many weather-related problems that disturbed the concerts in the years before, such as thunderstorms, rain and lasting bad weather periods. All in all, however, Widmann considers the 18,000 tickets sold a “respectable
success”.

Widmann is especially proud of the “very good atmosphere“ among experts and musicians alike. “The South Tyrol Jazz Festival is gradually turning into a real platform for musicians who often meet here for the first time and take home new inspiration for their creative progress.” Also this year has seen many unprecedented performances of stars of the international jazz scene who have come together in South Tyrol for the first time. Already the opening evening, for example, presented the Israeli world star Noa on stage with Fabrizio Bosso and Luciano Biondini, and Matthias Schriefl performed with Gianluca Petrella. With Marina Maximilian Blumin the Jazz Festival presented a very promising young artist for the first time in Europe.

Among international jazz followers and experts in the field the festival has again generated a very positive response. About 20 international journalists followed the festival, among them representatives of the “Washington Post“, the “Süddeutsche Zeitung“, the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation “Bayrischer Rundfunk“ and “TV München“, as well as of the journals “All about Jazz“ and “Jazz’n’more“, to name just a few.
