#48 - Verneri Pohjola Group

Verneri Pohjola is one of Finland's most successful jazz musicians. Nominated Musician of the Year in 2004, in 2009 he conducted Ilmiliekki Quartet getting awarded the most important Finnish music prize ("Emma") in the field of jazz. In 2016 he formed this band to reinterpret his father's music – the legendary bassist and composer Pekka Pohjola, who died in 2008. On the album "Pekka" (2017) the quintet convincingly implemented this idea. The arrangements of twenty years' material have become more jazzy than the originals. Verneri Pohjola doesn't shy away from interferences, but respectfully handles the compositions, thus making each piece its own.
