Philipp Gropper, who is firmly rooted in Berlin, says, ‘Pure virtuosity, lofty thoughts or that omnipresent ennui bore me. I care about directness and aura. I’m very close to tradition, but I try to breathe life and freshness into it, something which could only exist against the backdrop of our current times and which, at the time, guaranteed the immortality of the old masters.’ He founded Philm, his quartet, in 2011 and the ensemble embodies and delivers precisely that. Philipp Gropper has found three excellent musicians for this purpose. They’re strong enough to avoid distorting the trance-like qualities of the pieces and succeed in performing with him. You can hear just how good they are if you listen to these two CDs: ‘Licht’ (2012) and ‘The Madman of Naranam’ (2015).
