Jazz and punk? Is that even possible? Looks like it. Trumpeter Matthias Schriefl proves how wrong we are in thinking otherwise with his band, Shreefpunk. The man, who is somewhat of a regular guest in South Tyrol, is unpredictable as it is. Schriefl plays trumpets, flugelhorns, alpenhorns, euphoniums, baritone horns, and sousaphones; he composes, organises concerts, and also leads a dozen or so musical ensembles with different musicians. Shreefpunk – wait for it – is strengthened on this occasion by four string players of the Munich Philharmonic who are a dab hand at jazz, too. They sometimes expand their range of sounds with modern classic or create Schriefl’s well-known musical quirks – making this acoustic concert, staged against the backdrop of the mountains near Carezza Lake, quite the extraordinary event.
