The Slovenian word for plum is ‘sliwa’, and the plum-based grappa is called Sliwowitz. When a jazz ensemble is called Slivovitz you’ll automatically think of the Balkans… and in this case you aren’t too far off from the mark, even though the septet was founded in 2001 in Naples. The seven band members feel comfortable playing in different styles, and the musical spectrum encompasses modern jazz, clumsy stomping rock riffs, lively funk elements, and traditional music from the Balkans and the western Mediterranean area. In the last 9 years this electrifying fusion band from the Italian Mezzogiorno has produced four CDs: ‘Slivovitz’ (2006), ‘Hubris’ (2009), ‘Bani Ahead’ (2011), and ‘All You Can Eat’ (2015).
